Contemporary artist Annie Morris is creating a sculptural dress for 2012’s World Wildlife Fund Pandamonium 2. The artist is offering an amazing opportunity to any students with sewing or embroidery skills, to assist her in this exciting project.

The finished dress will be shown as part of a unique catwalk show of wearable sculpture, to raise funds and awareness for the World Wildlife Fund’s 50^th anniversary. The event, being held on March 31, will show work by 25 leading artists, architects and fashion designers including Grayson Perry, Zaha Hadid, Richard Wilson, Idris Khan, Hussein Chalayan and Annie Morris. Following the event, there will be a public exhibition of all pieces from the catwalk show.

Loredana Novotni's conceptual capsule collection "Sacred" focuses upon hand-crafted knit and crochet techniques to create innovative textures, with an emphasis upon a structured silhouette. Each intricately hand-crafted piece in the collection took Novotni a month to complete. The results are stunning.

Loredana Novotni has always loved to draw since she was a young child. With no thoughts of becoming a fashion designer, Loredana simply loved to make dresses for dolls. When she was 7 years old her mother and grandmother taught her to knit and crochet. These hand-crafted techniques became an integral part of Novotni's design style, "I like to work with textiles, I like to discover new textures, new ways to do things."

Novotni sees fashion as an art form. Art that can be touched. Interacted with. Novotni explains "Design should have soul and should touch the five senses of a person. Each design must be as unique as the artist."

Loredana Novotni has recently started to work with concept stores in her home country, Romania. Her future ambitions include expanding her brand into other countries and the opportunity for "various collaborations with other designers and known artists"

Oooh! I'm loving the new Spring Summer '12 collection by From Somewhere. A creative sustainable label producing collections from luxury designer fabric off-cuts. Their SS12 collection also includes some of the season's key trends.

There are sportswear influences, including satin trimmed shorts reminiscent of Balenciaga's Resort '12 collection. A hint of contemporary tribal - a key fashion statement for Summer. Bright colours - yellow, orange, pink set back against black. Luscious deep toffee brown. Tones of petrol blue. Colour blocking mixed with stripes and prints.

Of course, no Summer '12 collection would be complete without a nod towards to the Sixties, which continues to be a major influence. A simple shift dress has been created with panels of mixed textures, including a sky blue jacquard giving this 1960's classic a 2012 spin.

All womenswear collections are made by up-cycling high-end fashion and surplus textiles - fabric swatches, production off-cuts and end of rolls. So! How are your new year’s resolutions coming along? Set yourself any major challenges for the year?

I have to applaud Livia Firth for championing The Green Carpet Challenge 2012, which will feature some of the fashion world’s biggest names. Livia Firth founded the Green Carpet Challenge in December 2009 when she attended the Golden Globes with her husband, Colin Firth. The challenge was for Livia to attend all red carpet events dressed only in sustainable fashion with the aim to raise awareness of environmental and social justice in the fashion industry.

The Green Carpet Challenge 2012 brings together fashion luminaries Giorgio Armani, Chanel, Alberta Ferretti, Tom Ford, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney, Paul Smith, Valentino, Roger Vivier and Ermenegildo Zegna. Each designer will create an original outfit that defines sustainable style to be worn on the world’s red carpet events during 2012. The first of which will be The Golden Globes being held tomorrow evening.

It's a very exciting and glamorous time for sustainable fashion. Thank you Livia Firth!

Congratulations to Christopher Raeburn on winning the Emerging Talent award for Menswear at the British Fashion Awards earlier this week. I know it sounds like a cliche but it couldn't have gone to a nicer person. Hugely talented too. Well deserved!

When I first met Raeburn at London Fashion Week in February 2010, he was showing his collection of jackets, bombers and parkas created from re-appropriated military materials. I was blown away by the innovation, research and sourcing behind the beautifully crafted collection. I have followed Raeburn's progress ever since.

Raeburns signature designs are his flyweight wind-cheaters, which are constructed from de-commissioned military parachutes. Each streamlined style is cleverly pieced together, incorporating taped seams and screen printed panels to create a contemporary collection.

All pieces in his collection are remade in England.

I couldn't resist the invitation to visit Partimi's studio last week. I was welcomed at the studio's gloss black victorian door by Eleanor Dorrien-Smith, the label's designer/founder. Eleanor led me into Partimi's high ceilinged, light-filled studio where I was offered coconut macaroon biscuits and tea, served on vintage china.

I took the opportunity to pre-view the label's SS12 collection ... dreaming of summer, sandy toes and wild weather... As with Partimi's previous collections, Eleanor has been inspired by the childhood memories of her family - sandy beaches, fishing, collecting shells and long walks. One of my favourite pieces is a silk jersey shift dress printed with a scene of stranded fishing boats at low tide. Stunning!

The collection retains the Partimi design aesthetic of understated silhouettes, striking prints, organic fabrics created with an environmental edge.

November in England brings with it short days, blustery winds, frosty mornings and damp air. It also brings with it Guy Fawkes night, when we remember gun-powder, treason and plot.

Yesterday evening I wrapped myself in warm clothes, ventured into the cold evening air along with crowds of others, to watch the dark night sky burst into bright colourful patterns. Each delivered with loud crackles that ricoched through the darkness.

I recently read an article - in one of those free daily papers available at train stations - about the length of time it takes for a Fashion Editor - of one of those glossy, international, monthly fashion tomes - to be seen wearing outfits from designer catwalk collections. One Editor, was seen in an outfit from Prada's SS12 collection in a matter of days (it may have been less) after it was shown on the catwalk.

Here starts the dizzying whirl of the fashion wheel for another season. It's a frantic fashionista race to claim the title for being one of the first to be seen wearing the latest collections. Here, too, is where I have a confession to make. On Friday, I found myself caught up in this race.

I'd popped into the Save the Children shop on Westbourne Grove in Notting Hill. As I was taking a leisurely flick through the rails, I noticed something shimmering in the light. I hastily pushed back a selection of clothes to reveal a brocade skirt, which instantly reminded me of the plethora of brocade skirts shown on the Spring Summer '12 catwalks. Without hesitation, I whipped it from the rail. Tried it on. Loved it. Bought it. A key fashion piece for my wardrobe.

For over two years now, I have been living with a bare lightbulb in the ceiling light at the top of my stairs. Having searched high and low considering various options, I am still totally in-the-dark as to how to shade the naked glare.

Perhaps something mid-century modern? Something reclaimed from a victorian school? Something Scandinavian? Something tongue-in-cheek chintz?

This morning my light-bulb of inspiration shone at Brixton Village Market, where one of the 'Avenues' has the most wonderfully adorned lights hanging from it's 1930's ceiling. Each light has a unique shade created from a combination of chintz damasks, retro wooden and plastic lanterns, English country florals, 1960's patterns, scallop edges and fringing.

So there hangs the answer of how to dress my bare light-bulb. I'll combine all of my ideas to create one unique piece. The search for each individual shade begins...

The clothes featured are from Hong Kong label Lamkayan's project Underground, the world beneath your feet. Designer Ka Yan used the Earth's structure, layers and erosion to inspire the colours and prints used in the collection.

Arbiter Elegantiarum is the title of Corrie Nielsen's SS12 collection, which was shown on the catwalk on Friday as part of London Fashion Week. Arbiter Elegantiarum - a judge or authority in matters of taste.

Corrie Nielsen dipped into a dark Victorian mood for this collection, with inspirations taken from Oscar Wilde's gothic novel, The Picture of Dorian Grey together with influences of late nineteenth century men's tailored dress, which was brought together with a contemporary Japanese aesthetic.

Architectural silhouettes, meticulous pleating and innovative folding techniques were executed in great swathes of sumptuous fabrics. All brought together in a restrained colour palette of deep midnight blue, gunmetal grey and ivory, with a flash of chartreuse throughout.

The overall effect was refined, elegant and contemporary.

After seeing the collection, it comes as no surprise to me that Corrie Nielsen has been described as a modern couturier and true fashion visionary.

London Fashion Week. Day 1. What a crazy day it was!

Disappearing invitations. Re-appearing invitations. Technical malfunctions. Wardrobe malfunctions. Running late for shows. Shows running late. Hey! Wouldn't fashion be boring without a little drama?

Corrie Nielsen started the day for me with a dramatic catwalk show inspired by Dorien Gray with a modern Japanese twist. Images and collection round-up to follow in a separate post.

Mei Hui Liu's label Victim, returned to it;s East End roots with a pop-up shop on Redchurch Street. There until 18th September.

Jhb/gi - James Hamilton Butler x George Ichikawa had an exhibition of their collection with video installations.

Finally the much anticipated Vauxhall Fashion Scout 'Ones to Watch' catwalk show, with innovative collections from Phoebe English, Alice Lee, Shao Yen and Malene Oddershede Bach. I'll be posting a separate piece with images of all collections.

I am so excited to read that Shao-Yen Chen has received a Ones to Watch award from the Vauxhall Fashion Scout. The 'Goddess' collection certainly caught my eye when it was presented at London Fashion Week in February. A wonderfully innovative use of textures, embellishment and colour brought together in delicately sculptured silhouettes. The designer has created a trademark for experimentation with textiles and silhouette, explaining it is "a way of reinventing traditional crafts with new materials and forms."

The One's to Watch award was set-up to support and help emerging, innovative designers to build sustainable businesses. As part of the award, Shao-Yen's SS12 collection will be shown on the Fashion Scout catwalk during London Fashion Week in September.

Inspirations for the new collection have been taken from 80's and 90's street-wear with tribal, punk and bondage elements. I can't wait to see it. Especially when Shao-Yen's design philosophy is "be open to everything"

I love Emesha's AW12 collection!

Taking it's initial inspiration from the shirt, the collection reworks this classic shape into other garments to create a relaxed, contemporary look. These pieces are juxtaposed with razor sharp tailoring for a clean silhouette resulting in a collection of unique pieces with an androgynous edge.

When I viewed the collection at London Fashion Week's Estethica, what also struck me was the premium quality of it's finish and fabrics - all of which are 100% natural and/or organic. The label is fully committed to environmental and social responsibilities: always sourcing new eco-friendly fabrics, using sustainable materials and recycling as much as possible.

In addition to this, Emesha practices fair wage policy and production is organized to help the depriving fashion industry in Hungary.

What is there not to love about Emesha.

Influenced by her Tanzanian culture, the designer re-creates the traditional East African cotton "Khanga" into quirky yet wearable styles. Christine Mhando's aim is to create pieces that are timeless rather than driven by seasonal trends.

Stunning colour combinations, eye-catching prints and intricate embellishments play a significant part in the collections. The result is an eclectic collection of modern dresses and separates.

Goodone the award-winning fashion label continues to go from strength to strength with each season. I have been so impressed with the last two collections - Spring Summer 2011 and Autumn Winter 2011 - previewed at London Fashion Week.

Following on from the mentorship with Yasmin Sewell as part of a British Fashion Council scheme, Goodone's Designer and Co-Founder Nin Castle has pushed up-cycling to a "a new level of luxury". For Spring Summer, Goodone combines re-claimed garments and surplus fabrics with new British produced fabrics to create fashion-forward styles with an Active Sportswear influence, a key look for Summer 2011: body-con shapes, contrast panels, mesh fabrics and recycled festival tents!

Drawers filled with Style and Salvage - by Rupert Blanchard

Created with discarded drawers that were once part of a 40's desk, a fitted wardrobe,
a Victorian chest of drawers, a haberdashery shop cabinet,
a 50's sideboard and a 20's chest of drawers.

Rupert Blanchard is obsessed with drawers. It began when he was a curious child visiting his Grandma's house, which was furnished with watchmakers cabinets and drawers. His obsession and curiosity has developed into a creative talent for up-cycling abandoned, unused and unwanted drawers. Blanchard scours junk shops, car boot sales and market stalls for discarded furniture to re-create into cabinets that will once again be wanted. Each individual drawer has a story to tell from another era, brought together to create something extremely modern yet timeless.

As Rupert Blanchard says "The main rule I have set myself is to only use objects that no longer fulfill the purpose for which they were originally created, and to make the unwanted wanted again."

I first met Eleanor Dorrien-Smith, the designer behind Partimi, this time last year when she was showing her work at London Fashion Week as part of the Centre for Sustainable Fashion. It was lovely to catch up with her again to view her Autumn Winter 2011 collection 'Garden', which draws it's inspiration from lush winter gardens, childhood memories and momentum.

Eleanor explained to me how the striking prints in her collection were inspired by photographs of her father playing as a child in the family garden: an overwhelmingly beautiful place. Another print was inspired by moss and lichen covered benches in the family garden. The textural 'Lichen' design is digitally printed onto an organic silk satin dress to stunning effect. One of my favourite pieces in the collection.

Other styles include a photographic palm print dress in organic silk jersey that tucks and drapes gently around the body. A luxuriously soft tapered leg trouser and a collar-less jacket

with a clean silhouette - both in organic wool.

Eleanor has created a beautiful contemporary collection that is simple yet stunning. Oh yes! It's also ethically produced using sustainably sourced fabrics. The only down-side is that we have to wait until Autumn Winter before we can wear it.

Edun brings elegant ethics to New York fashion week

Way, way back in Autumn 2009 I read that the eco-fashion brand Edun - set up by Bono and his wife Ali Hewson - was selling a stake to LVMH. Yes! LVMH. LVMH the world's largest luxury group. I have to admit I was shocked. Was Edun selling out? Would Edun's original ethics - building sustainable communities in the areas where the clothes are produced - be lost behind the luxury corporate powerhouse that is LVMH.

One thing is for certain, it proves that LVMH is taking a serious interest in sustainability. As Suzy Menkes of the International Herald Tribune said "For the forward-looking in the industry, ethics is the new elegance, and doing things right carries more weight than doing things fast"

Edun's AW2011 collection brings ethics and elegance to the international catwalks. Whilst remaining committed to the brand's fair-trade principles, Edun's designer Sharon Wauchob has created a collection with so many I-Want-One-of-Those pieces.

Each beautifully hand-crafted piece in the collection can take Kukhareva up to seven days to construct, including two days to make the fabric. Traditional techniques of macrame, fringing and crochet have been used with opulent embellishment to create timeless pieces for strong, sensual, modern women.

Fashion Forward was set up 5 years ago to promote and provide funding to talented emerging British designers. The British Fashion Council announced on Friday that Meadham Kirchhoff, Peter Pilotto and Todd Lynn will receive Fashion Forward sponsorship to show at London Fashion Week next month and again in September this year.

Based upon previous season's innovative designs, I eagerly await the new collections at London Fashion Week in February.

I recently heard a story about a gang of 'Chavs' who - accompanied by their heavily chained, muscular dogs - broke into a stately home with the intention of stealing valuables of any kind. Once inside the house, rather ransacking and stealing, the gang entertained themselves by dressing-up in the owner's stunning clothes and jewelry.

The designer David Longshaw told me that story. It's the story behind his Spring Summer 2011 collection. A collection of innovative styles printed with David Longshaw's humorous illustrations in a palette of mid-tone summer pastels. The combination creates a feminine collection with a quirky urban edge.

I am delighted to have found La Tonkinoise a Paris: a brand of delicate up-cycled jewelry. Created with an arts and crafts approach, it's designer makes use of vintage rings, bracelets, necklaces and watches that she finds in Paris flea markets. Each piece is hand-made to create unique items that mix together "glamourous and ramshackle, rough and luxurious, rock 'n roll and poetic".

By recycling discarded jewelry, La Tonkinoise's designer has brought to life rejected items to create modern individual pieces with a story to tell.

I came across this wonderful shop whilst wandering around the narrow streets of Copenhagen. It's a combination of a cafe, fair trade shop and vintage boutique all brought together in a relaxed, stylish environment that is synonymous with Copenhagan.

Upstairs, classic Danish chairs and coffee tables sit amongst sustainable and fair trade products including toys, home-wares, food and eco balloons! Downstairs there is a collection of re-designed vintage clothing - SKIFt - for men and women, together with vintage shoes, bags and jewellery.

All proceeds from the shop help fund the work of DanChurchAid in an effort to overcome poverty and suffering in developing countries.

Can't believe I haven't yet mentioned Felicity Brown.

I was wandering around Liberty's yesterday when I noticed a rail of stunning dresses, created in ruffled layers of hand-dyed, pleated silk. I instantly recognised the dresses from Felicity Brown's debut collection. I'd seen pieces from this collection at London Fashion Week back in September, where I was captivated by the breath-taking beauty of each piece within this small couture collection. All of the dresses are hand-made, hand-dyed and hand-printed using precious silks.

I am totally in awe of Felicity Brown's creative talent. So sorry it's taken me so long to share this with you.

Yang Du's spring summer 2011 collection - He is superman - is inspired by the toys and games of her childhood. The expressive emotions of Superman, Batman and Astroboy play leading roles in the stories Du creates through each design within the collection. Inspiration is also drawn from the Korean Toy Museum and it's collection of retro and stuck-together 'mutant' toys.

The collection is a riot of bold colour, surreal images and over-sized shapes constructed in panelled jersey, patchwork and digital prints. All is brought together to create humorous yet sexy designs. It's no wonder fans of her designs include Marina (and the Diamonds), Paloma Faith and Daisy Lowe.

There is a real sense of fun about Yang's work that I love. I was also bowled over by her creative exuberance and serious professionalism. A real inspiration. I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot more of Yang Du and her surreal take on fashion.

I've just spent an hour or so outfit building for Autumn Winter - can't wait to start layering all those lovely textures together - long floor sweeping silk skirts with chunky knits, metallic jacquards with - I'm not sure what yet. Delicate vintage lace with my 1980's shearling flying jacket.

Then I see Suno's Spring Summer '11 collection, which makes me yearn to wear light fabrics, fresh colours, bare legs with those amazing printed wedge sandals.

Avoiding the rain in style - Christopher Raeburn

Having just spent four days in Copenhagen I have returned to England inspired. Inspired to have cheek bone implants. Inspired to have my legs stretched. Inspired to ride my bike in the pouring rain while maintaining an air of stylish confidence.

On my first afternoon in the city there was an almighty down pour. As I scurried along with my shoulders hunched over, spluttering as I fought with my umbrella, the cycle path along side me was busy with Copenhageners pedalling – through the torrential rain - with an effortless sartorial style. Meanwhile, as my double denim outfit became rain-soaked, heavy and crumpled, I cursed myself for not being a practical packer.

Of course the perfect thing to have taken would have been one of Christopher Raeburn's Parachute Parkas.

I’ve always admired Christopher Raeburn’s work. His innovative use of sustainable fabrics, his attention to detail and superb cut ensure his collections offer premium quality – as well as functionality and a sense of fun.

Raeburn has received New Generation sponsorship to show his SS11 collection during London Fashion Week. His inspirations for next season are dazzle camouflage, adaptability and the great outdoors. I can’t wait.

Maison Martin Margiela at Somerset House

Finally I made it to Somerset House to see the Maison Martin Margiela exhibition. I followed the iconic Tabi footprints, which led me into a bright white space. Here, I found a Maison Martin Margiela group portrait, cut from white Styrofoam Margiela wanting to maintain his anonymity is not included in the portrait. A white board explained the familar numbers that became the respected (non) label for Margiela's collections.

In the following space a huge screen presented the Maison's 20th anniversary show. Two decades of influential fashion concepts and key pieces were re-visited before me on film. I was captivated. Tearing myself away, I walked up to a canvas trompe l"oeil printed curtain, which gave the illusion of a large empty room. Once through the curtain, I entered a white-washed room showing concepts and garments from 20 year's of Margiela collections.

One of which was the 1996 Spring-Summer Trompe L'Oeil collection in which simple garment shapes were cut in soft, fluid fabrics. Each piece is then printed with a photograph of another completely different garment. A cardigan, for example, is printed with a safari jacket. A dress with a photographic print of the inside of a 1960's cocktail dress. A 'chesterfield' sofa effect is printed onto a leather jacket. The colour palette - reminiscent of old photographs - is kept to black, white, sepia and brown tints.

Other concepts included a dress with it's hemline lifted and stitched to one shoulder revealing a slip dress made from vintage lace slips. A satin halter dress with it's skirt made from two different skirts, one stitched onto the other. A second-hand man's suit jacket, painted over with silver paint. Blouses and jackets with their sleeves repositioned to the front. A sleeveless woollen top with visible, frayed lining at the neck, armholes and seams. A dress made from lining fabric with visible darts on the outside. A jacket made from a man's jacket sleeves. Another jacket made with the sleeves switched and sewn back to front, so that the jacket can be worn with the fastening at the back. A patchwork vest made from stitched interfacings. A halter neck top made from second hand gloves...

Oh! How I have been inspired by Maison Martin Margiela over the years. The master of de-construction - reinterpreting how a garment should be worn by taking it apart and recreating every piece with skillfully crafted precision.

Dark, sensual and sustainable - Minna AW10

Inspired by the classic 1950's film noir period, designer Minna Hepburn has moved away from her usual soft colours and vintage cream lace to create a sophisticated collection in a palette of black and hand-dyed shades of grey. The collection still maintains Minna's signature quirky details and plenty of lace, only much darker.

Minna has used luxurious fabrics such as Scottish lace, Hemp/silk, organic wool, vintage textiles and leather off-cuts to create sensual dresses with an urban edge. Hand embellishment adds exquisite and unexpected detailing to the collection.

With this new design direction, Minna is one of my favourite 'Eco' fashion collections for AW10.

Awamaki Lab - Fashion Mentorship opportunity

There are many designers – myself included – who have taken inspiration from the traditional textiles of Peru. For me, it’s the vibrant hues woven together to create stunning colour combinations and patterns that I have been drawn to, which in turn has created a fascination for me with Peru itself. The indigenous people, their culture and the country’s landscape.

So imagine my excitement when I came across Awamaki Lab, a fashion mentorship program that works in conjunction with Awamaki, a Peruvian NGO that runs a textile revitalization project to help impoverished Quechua women weavers improve their skills, gain financial independence and secure a reliable source of income.

Awamaki Lab explores sustainability, ethical sourcing and product innovation. The program – lasting three months - fosters the cross-cultural partnership between the designers and Awamaki’s indigenous weavers.

The designers also receive mentorship from leaders in the ethical design sector. Tara St. James, owner and creative director of New York label Study is Awamaki Lab’s first Design Mentor. Tara is a talented pioneer of ethical fashion – I’ve previously written about her design collective on this blog.

Awamaki Lab offers an unparalleled opportunity for selected designer participants to develop a capsule collection in the serene environment of Ollantaytambo, Peru. Through the process, designers hone their artistic skills and lend a modern perspective to Awamaki’s range of products. This will improve the organization’s marketability and help to stimulate economic growth in the isolated, rural communities where Awamaki works.

I came across these images yesterday whilst having a spring clean on my computer. I'd taken them one evening as I was walking through Paris's Le Marais district. It's a window display from a vintage shop that specialises in interiors and accessories. I can't remember the name but it's on Rue des Francs Bourgeois.

The whole display has a 1950's Latino Carmen Miranda feel to it, don't you think? I love the vintage raffia bag embroidered in vibrant citrus colours. Such a statement! Those chunky bangles are original 1930's bakerlite. Pile 'em on and clash those colours. Ah! but it's the huge bauble earrings that are to die for! Wear these and you'll be so on trend this summer.

I met Michelle Lowe-Holder at London Fashion Week in February where she was showing her AW10 accessories collection inspired by the idea of creating treasures from trash - more about that collection in a later post.

Michelle has always loved using traditional textile embellishment techniques in her work, which shines through in her latest collection for SS10 - Summer Smock. In this collection of mainly black and cream pieces, Michelle has redesigned historic "Labourer's Embroidery" from the middle ages, bringing it bang up-to-date with modern shapes created in fluid jersey and ruffled silk.

I love this collection! Each piece has an effortless and unique style. And isn't that what we'd all like to have?

Walking along the glorious stretch of beach at Camber Sands in East Sussex at the weekend I came across this curious - at first sight - 'Blair Witch' installation. Had it been built as part of some East Sussex folklore ritual? Perhaps the crashing waves had brought it here after gathering it in their tide? Or, had someone created it as a piece of sea-side art?

One of the things I have most enjoyed about writing this blog is meeting emerging designers whose infectious enthusiasm for sustainable fashion has been inspiring and uplifting. During London Fashion Week I met Pamela Atekepe and Michelle Lowe-Holder who took great pleasure in explaining to me the concepts behind their designs - more on each designer's work in a separate post.

Their work was being showcased at LFW after completing a Business Support Programme at the Centre for Sustainable Fashion. The programme consists of small group seminars and one to one advice sessions offering tailored support and guidance. All areas of sustainable fashion are covered including business development, range planning, production and communications. On completing the programme, participants will be eligible for a variety of showcasing and press opportunies. Including the CSF stand at London Fashion Week.

The CSF is currently offering places on the programme - the next introductory seminar will take place on 30th March 2010. The programme is fully subsidised for small to medium sized fashion businesses based in the greater London area.

It's two weeks since I wobbled across the cobbled court yard of Somerset House in seriously uncomfortable boots. Grimacing as I entered the LFW New Generation exhibition, I found my pain relief in Louise Gray's Autumn Winter 2010 collection. Her exuberant range was presented on hand-drawn drawn figures with sea-side style cut-out holes for faces. The overall mood was definitely for a sense of fun. And it certainly made me smile.

The Quilt Me, Change Me collection is a collage of delicious colour and intriguing textures. Louise Gray is an innovative textile designer. By using traditional methods of devore, quilting and patchwork, Louise transforms fabrics into something completely different.

I was captivated by the contrasting colours, prints and textures used in off-kilter panel dresses and skirts.

A stunning red kimono coat was one of my favourite pieces. The incredible 3D texture was created by applying devore - where fabric is burned away - onto layers of quilted fabrics. The top layer of fabric had almost disappeared to leave a hounds-tooth effect of threads caught in place by the quilting.

By pushing the boundaries of textile design, Louise has created a collection of refreshingly modern pieces to be worn with a smile.

Ada Zanditon - Echolocation

Opposite the house where I grew up stood a row of very tall trees. At dusk, when the sky turned carbon bluish grey, the trees’ blackened silhouettes came alive with dark flecks that darted amongst the high branches. Our neighbouring bats had awoken. Although I often wondered whether they were related to Dracula – who had visited my local seaside town – I was always more mesmerised than frightened by the nocturnal activities of these little winged creatures that had spent all day hanging upside down.

Ada Zanditon’s fascination for bats and their conservation inspired her Autumn Winter 2010 collection Echolocation. Whilst looking across a low set winter sky from her studio window, Zanditon imagined bats ”mysterious and eerie…with their fine structured wings” navigating and communicating their way in a nocturnal world. A world in which, sadly, their numbers are plummeting.

From this initial concept Zanditon has created a stunning collection combining digital prints - inspired by bare branches and beating wings - with structured silhouettes, geometric pleated panels, body-con styling and elegant full length dresses. All pieces are produced in East London using organic cottons, Shetland wool, high quality silk taffeta and organza - all eco-dyed or digitally printed in the bruised colours of a winter sky: purples, indigo, grey and black with flashes of bright fuchsia, jade and teal.

When I asked Ada how she became interested in ethical and sustainable fashion she explained to me that she had always been interested in the environment. Whilst studying fashion she attended a presentation by Katherine Hamnett, which inspired her to combine her two passions of fashion and conservation.

With this innovative collection of wearable, eye-catching pieces, Ada Zanditon has successfully communicated her design talents as well as her passion for conservation. Especially for the bat population.

I mentioned in an earlier post that I was looking forward to Henrietta Ludgate's new collection. I was also very excited to be invited to her presentation and party on Tuesday evening. Unfortunately, for reasons too boring to go into, I couldn't make it to her presentation. Fortunately, my impatience to see her collection got the better of me so I'd taken a peek at the Estethica exhibition. And I'm glad I did.

Henrietta has once again created elegantly crafted pieces for Autumn Winter 2010. Her distinctive sculptural silhouettes have been used in a collection inspired by enchanted forests at dusk and legendary tales of Brahan Seer - the oracle from the Black Isle. Modern abstract prints - in a palette of deep smoke greys with a flash of silver - capture the mood. A double-faced wool coat dress - skillfully crafted with a high quality finish - was the statement piece.

All pieces in Henrietta's collection are produced locally in the Scottish Highlands using organic and natural fabrics including Pure Scottish wool and superfine Yorkshire wool jersey.

Henrietta has created a sustainable, sophisticated collection with a modern edge.

Michael van der Ham - the unassuming yet extremely talented designer behind his eponymous label - appeared slightly embarrassed as I waxed lyrical about his stunning new collection. As I gasped with delight at each beautifully crafted piece he smiled quietly. I wondered whether I was being unfashionably over-the-top? Perhaps I needed to calm myself down.

For his AW10 collection, Michael has used silk devore, silk chiffon, mohair, organza and liberty prints all patch-worked together with a skillful eye for colour, texture and print to create feminine pieces with an eccentric twist. For women who "are not afraid to wear something a little more bold."

Each piece is perfectly executed and produced to a high standard in the UK. These are very special pieces to treasure for ever.

Grey was today's dominant colour. A wet-look finish being key. Flashes of bright colour and digital prints highlighted the look.

I'm talking about the look in the courtyard at Somerset House.

Inside was a completely different story. I was very excited by what I saw at Michael van der Ham and Louise Gray ... both extremely talented in their use of fabrics, print and textile finishes. Separate blog on each to come.

Always one to use her catwalk shows as an opportunity to make political statements, Dame Vivienne opened the show with printed t-shirts to draw attention to climate change. The show continued with her statement tartans, beautifully cut tailoring, signature twisted and draped silhouettes together with flashes of pink, coral and bright orange.

Little Green Story at London Fashion Week

I came across Little Green Story at London Fashion Week. This Swedish brand creates organic t-shirts with illustrations inspired by emotions and moments in life. Helena Akesson the designer behind the label told me that she wants to work towards eco-friendly and ethical fashion that is both simplistic and trendy. As she explained: comfortable with a rock and roll edge. Minimal yet directional.

Helena designs Little Green Story for independent, trend aware urban women with an environmentally conscious mind. Her aim is to expand the collection for next season to offer a complete concept. I will keeping an eye out for future stories.

Prophetik AW10 -Sustainable collection with rock attitude

Prophetik’s AW10 show opened at Vauxhall Fashion Scout yesterday to the haunting sound of a lone violin. Violinist Anna Crawd walked slowly onto the dimly lit catwalk where she was accompanied by guitarist Jason Bynum. As they played their blue-grass tune they were joined by a ghost like model dressed in a black vintage silk, high collared, corseted dress that could have come straight from 1800's Tennessee. The model continued her haunting walk - gliding with an expressionless stare along the catwalk. As she disappeared backstage, the bright spotlights went up, the blue grass faded and the room was filled with the sound of nuwave rock from Man Raze playing in the corner.

A procession of perfectly executed pieces inspired by the American Civil War came onto the catwalk. Full length peace silk dresses - worn with vintage boots - floated by, slouchy jodphurs, neat fitted jackets, indigo dyed dresses and subtle paint splattered prints on hemp jersey. Male models strode by in structured military coats with vintage Civil War buttons layered over herringbone hemp jackets and waistcoats. And, finally a blood red distressed velvet gown brought the show to a close. Stunning.

All pieces were created from organic and sustainable fabrics including cotton, flax, corduroy, denim and Greenspun fleece (made from recycled bottles). Crinkled and washed finishes – synonymous with organic clothing – were given a fashion edge. A kind of homespun with rock musician attitude.

I loved every piece that came along the catwalk. It’s fantastic that it’s a completely sustainable collection but what’s more is that each individual piece is well designed and extremely wearable. And that’s what grabs your attention before anything else.

Unfortunately, I was having camera problems during the show. Or rather, my camera was having photographer problems. So sorry I don't have any catwalk images to show.

I've been a little quiet for the last couple of days so sorry for that. No reason in particular. But hey! London Fashion Week starts on Friday so I'll have plenty of posts to come. I'll be checking out the Estethica exhibition, New Generation Designers and Vauxhall Fashion Scout including the Prophetik show and - fingers crossed - the Ada Zanditon show.

I'm also really looking forward to seeing the AW10 collection from Henrietta Ludgate, who won the Ethical Fashion Forum's Innovation Award for her SS10 collection. Henrietta - a champion of slow fashion - designs from her studio in the remote Scottish Highlands with an ethos of preserving traditional British craftsmanship being central to her work. All fabrics are sourced from within the British Isles and all pieces produced locally to create luxurious, cutting-edge and ethically sourced pieces.

The nineties are now vintage according to a pink neon sign in Selfridges window. I smiled at the tongue-in-cheek humour of the statement until it dawned on me that perhaps the Nineties really is being classed as vintage. How? How can a decade - that I remember so clearly - now be vintage?

I had a stall on Portobello Market in the Nineties. The era of grunge. I'd swan around the market wearing scuffed 1970's retro trainers, full length slinky skirts with a 1930's bias cut and loose knit, moth eaten sweaters. All worn with a thrown together - yet carefully styled - nonchalance.

Now it's back on the catwalk. Richard Chai's Love collection shown in New York this week has all the hallmarks of Nineties grunge. Fortunately, Richard Chai's collection is not a retrospective of the era - he has revived grunge with a modern edge.

His collection reminds me why I enjoyed Nineties fashion so much: The layers. Layering different textures, layering garments that are not usually worn together, mixing proportions.

It's time to mix up those layers. To be individual.

February is fashion fervour time. The international 'Fashion Weeks' begin this week with Copenhagen starting today followed by New York Fashion Week tomorrow. London Fashion Week returns to Somerset House on February 19th along with Esthetica the ethical fashion exhibition and off-schedule shows at Vauxhall Fashion Scout.

I'm delighted that Vauxhall Fashion Scout - set-up to promote new and emerging talent during London Fashion Week - is opening with the Tennessee-based sustainable brand Prophetik. Jeff Garner, the designer behind the label, told Drapers Online that he is "looking forward to doing an all-sustainable catwalk show...hoping it will set a marker for the future of the industry...to encourage other companies and individuals to get involved in sustainability."

Prophetik create collections for men and women - some of the pieces being unisex. Other pieces can be worn in more than one style creating a number of looks from one garment. Fabrics include organic cotton, organic silk, hemp and recycled fabrics. The inspiration behind the new collection is "early concepts of sustainability when resources were scarce".

With the brand's strong philosophy for sustainability and it's emphasis upon original design, Prophetik certainly prove that one does not have to be compromised for the other. I can't wait to see the new collection next Friday.

Suno New York leads the SS10 fashion tribe

I don't know about you but I can't wait for summer to arrive. Ever since those amazing tribal influenced prints came down the SS10 catwalks - back in September - I've been longing to transform my wardrobe with an energising shot of vibrant African print. A flash here. A flash there. All mixed in to revive my summer basics. Oooh! I'm getting quite excited about it now.

Even more exciting is that Suno New York - a label designed in New York and produced in Kenya - is now available in the UK. The label was set up by Max Osterweis as a means to employ local Kenyan talent and showcase some of Kenya's artistry, which could potentially affect positive and lasting social and economic change.

The collections - produced in small, fair trade workshops - incorporate traditional Kenyan kanga prints into modern, eclectic styles with a fashion edge. The collections are testament to the talent behind the label - Kenyan and New Yorker.

I know of Tara St James, the New York-based fashion designer and head of creative collective Study NY, through the Ethical Fashion Network. As part of the Study NY collective, Tara has designed a collection of sustainable clothing - The Square Project - which was launched at The Green Shows during New York Fashion Week last September.

It was this SS10 collection, with it's modern aesthetic, clean lines and cool colours that first grabbed my attention. The collection consists of 14 pieces across 9 different styles and 2 separate colours. Each of the styles is made of a different number of squares of fabric. Tara's aim was to create a sustainably developed collection that can be worn in several different ways, using the most basic shape - the square.

The Study NY collective also produce jewellery, graphic design, photography, music and fine art with an aim to use recycled and organic materials as much as possible in their work. It's a positive study for fashion and design.

Be adorned by the Kalahari

A collaboration between two London based jewelers and The Bushmen of the Kalahari has resulted in a unique collection of directional jewelry.

Anna Haber and Sabine Roemer worked closely with Bushmen tribes women to create jewelry inspired by the Bushmen of the Kalahari's culture for adornment. The collection is a fusion of traditional skills and natural materials - Ostrich eggshells, seeds, bone and wood - with modern materials including satin and velvet.

The aim is to build a sustainable business for the tribe and generate an important source of income, especially for the women.

Also included in the exhibition will be highlights from Fashioning the Future 2009, the international student awards for sustainability in fashion as well as workshops and discussions.

Erin O'Connor promotes fair trade fashion

Thank you to The Observer Magazine for yesterday's cover story 'Model Behaviour - Catwalk queen Erin O'Connor on bringing fair trade fashion to the high steet'. The article gives much needed publicity to the work of SEWA (Self Employed Women's Asociation), an ethical fashion project set up to stop the exploitation of female home-workers in India. The project is partly funded by Traid (UK Textile Recycling for Aid and International Development) whose spokesperson is the model Erin O'Connor.

Female home-workers carry out highly skilled beading and embroidery embellishments for clothes destined for high-street retailers. The women can be paid as little as 54p for a 12 hour day. SEWA has increased the wages of their homeworkers as well as given them the opportunity to improve their lives and those of their families.

SEWA has contracts with Monsoon, Next and Gap and although these are only for small quantities it is a step in the right direction for high-street fashion.

I know. I know. What do I mean? -Winter 2010!! We've hardly had a hint of Spring 2010 I hear you cry. And there I was - only two weeks ago - spouting off my resolution for slowing down fashion. How can I possibly be slowing down when I'm practically leap-frogging the SS10 season to find myself falling head-over-heels for looks that have barely left the 'Pre-Fall 2010' catwalks. I simply couldn't resist.

This has to be my number 1 collection. That hard-edged, Forties glamour. Strong yet sensual. Don't mess with me attitude. I just love it! These outfits look even more amazing set against those distressed plaster walls and bare floor-boards. (Reminds me of my local pub). I could happily take each of these outfits to wear as they are, which could cause a bit of stir down at my local.

Balenciaga Pre-Fall 2010

Amazing bold colour. Futuristic tropical floral prints. Ingenious draping effects. All brought together with creative genius to produce a collection with impact. Although, I'll probably give the bright yellow leggings a miss.

I've mentioned before that I don't really do knitwear. This collection could be the one to convert me. I just love the layers of textures and colours that have been wrapped and draped to create each outfit. What's even more appealing is that each item can be wrapped and draped in more than one way to create different looks from one outfit. Multi-functional dressing at it's most creative.

Giles Pre-Fall 2010

Another of my favourites. Why? -Because of the creative direction - shown in an old porcelain factory. The styling - vivid coloured wigs and tool accessories. And, because it's Giles - one of my favourite British designers. Never afraid to take risks. I have to say I'm not loving the Laboutins. I just don't understand what all the fuss is. But I am loving the paper-clip prints. Stunning with a quirky edge on that floor length dress.

After a spate of inactivity on this blog I’d like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. I have to admit I am off to a bit of a slow start as we enter the new decade. In fact, slowing down is my fashion motivation for 2010. Slow fashion is the way forward. The zeitgeist. On trend. If you haven’t already started taking things at a slower pace, can I suggest you choose fashionably slowing down as your resolution for the new decade.

Don’t get me wrong. I love clothes. I love fashion. However, consumers have been living in a fast fashion frenzy for far too long. Lured by brands selling cheaply made, low quality cat-walk replicas to be cast aside after a couple of months to make way for the latest as-worn-by styles. Quantity has become more important than quality. Individuality is losing out all together.

I agree with Gill Linton’s ‘Stop Buying New Crap’ manifesto in her Fashion for Losers article. The manifesto states: “Buy timeless: one of a kind quality vintage…the well made, timeless or on-trend pieces that are easy to mix with contemporary looks and don’t cost vintage couture or contemporary Balmain prices…” What’s more, you'll be creating your own personal style.

Vivienne Westwood wants to see the end of "indiscriminate consumption" saying "If you have to choose something, save up and choose well."

OK rant over. Here’s to a slower paced fashion decade filled with individuality.

I Love Lowie

Last night after a few festive drinks at my local pub I walked home surrounded by a flurry of dancing snowflakes. How exciting. How magical. How uncomfortable it became as the freezing wind bit into my cheeks, nipped my ears and pinched it's frosty grasp around my thumbs, which were peeping out through holes in my gloves. The snowflakes' dance had lost it's magic.

As I am writing this I am watching another snowflake dance outside my window. It's cold out there. It's time to invest in some winter warmers to cocoon myself. I need look no further than Lowie who produce hand knitted and hand crocheted clothing and accessories using traditional hand crafted techniques. The result is a colourful, modern and ethically produced range, which is perfect for snuggling into on cold winter days. Ideal for Christmas gifts too.

I met Hannah Galvin-Horne - who runs Dark Dog Studio - at London Printworks last week where she experimented with Chinese cat designs to stunning effect. Hannah designs, screen-prints, dyes and makes a range of home-wares and accessories from studios in Ballinspittle, Co. Cork, Ireland.

Dark Dog Studio's work is produced using high quality inks and materials that are ethically sourced. Hannah tries to ensure that the production has as little impact on the environment as possible.

It is evident from Hannah's work that she is a talented painter and print designer, with a sharp eye for visual culture. Through her print designs, Hannah has created a bold, clean and contemporary range with a fun twist. A messy week at London Printworks

I’m still scrubbing ink from beneath my fingernails after spending an enjoyable 5 days being creatively messy at the London Print Works last week. I was there along with a small group of people for a workshop induction course, which covered basic textile printing processes through to more complex techniques. Following the induction, designers can hire the fully equipped workshop to produce their work.

We were fortunate to have Dawn Dupree - a talented textile artist and extremely patient tutor - leading the course. Each day Dawn would calmly demonstrate new techniques, which would send us enthusiastically racing back to our print tables to incorporate these into our textiles.

I enjoyed combining colours and textures. I enjoyed experimenting with different techniques. I enjoyed the unexpected results. I enjoyed being messy and I enjoyed wiping my ink-covered hands on my clothes. I really didn’t expect to enjoy myself quite so much. And, I didn’t expect to spend a week with such an open and friendly group of people all sharing ideas and advise. There was a tinge of sadness at the end of the week as we reviewed our work over mince pies and a couple of bottles of wine. I’d like to think we would catch up again. Hopefully, my hands will be clean by then.

As another series of the phenomena that is 'X-Factor' came to last night's not-soon-enough final, I was surprised by two things. The first that yesterday's Observer gave front page column space to the two finalists: Olly Murs and Joe McElderry. (If you're interested, it was Joe the 18 year old with a dazzling smile who won and who is now reportedly being whisked off to Hollywood by Simon Cowell to become South Shields answer to Zac Efron).

The second, is that Stella McCartney is rumoured to be linking-up with Leona Lewis - 2007's X-Factor winner and fellow vegetarian - to create a clothing range for 2010. The results of which I am interested in seeing.

Back at the V&A museum last week I was drawn into the crisp cold open-air of the centre courtyard. I paused in awe of the galleries shining brightly before me. Their grand facade framed by the clear dusk sky. To the other sides of the court yard, twinkling fir trees sat neatly in neon blue cubes. A blue that seemed to mirror the clear evening sky. I was entranced. What a beautiful start to the festive season.

Future Fashion at the V&A

Last week I immersed myself in the world of decorative arts at the Victoria and Albert museum. I was searching for print design inspiration for a textile course I have coming up in December. More about that in a later post.

While I was at the V&A I took the opportunity to have a look at 'Future Fashion Now' an exhibition showing work by the 2008 fashion graduates from the Royal College of Art. The exhibition presents concept, technique, form and detail by displaying student's sketchbooks, inspiration images, experimental mock-up designs and finished outfits.

I would like to thank the Ethical Fashion Forum for organising the Global Soucing Marketplace at the end of last week. It was an opportunity for buyers and designers to meet with fabric suppliers and garment producers working to supply sustainable, organic and fair trade fashion products.

The exhibition also featured One-off designs by Vivienne Westwood, Zandra Rhodes, Bora Aksu and Preen. Each designer worked with fabrics and components sourced from African manufacturers and community groups to show how sustainable fabrics can become high fashion.

I have recently returned from a few days in Lisbon, Portugal where I fell in love with the narrow cobbled streets of the Bairro Alto - the Old Quarter. The Bairro's maze of streets holds an eclectic mix of traditional and modern Lisbon. Fashionable boutiques, contemporary art galleries, cool bars, modern restaurants, traditional Fado music clubs, charming grocery shops and original homes stand side by side.

Nowhere is the mix of old and new more evident than from the exterior of the buildings. I was fascinated by the intricate patterns created by traditional ceramic tiles; the beautiful designs within aged wrought iron railings, precariously perched on upper floor windows; the pretty colours of more recently painted plaster-work; the modern graffiti painted walls.

Ahhh! Yes the graffiti. In places artistic. In others, scrawled across walls and doors of people's homes. I wonder does this also show an eclectic mix of the traditional and contemporary working together side by side? Or, is it simply the demise of an historical area through vandalism?

Hidden vintage gems

Is it only me? Or has anyone else set out with the sole purpose of buying a specific item only to return with something completely different? I was back in Crystal Palace - an area of London that really is a hidden gem for retro and vintage lovers – with the intention of buying a retro coffee table. I returned home with a vintage dress.

I'd found myself in Vien, a treasure trove of a boutique owned by the vivacious Vivienne Bartholomew. Vien sells an eclectic selection of unique vintage clothing including a wonderful choice of Fifties dresses, elegant eveningwear, tailoring and accessories. A Lurex batwing top from the 80’s caught my eye. As did a metallic jacquard top – very Marni. Ahhh! But it was a Little Black Dress with sheer voluminous sleeves that won me over. A perfect fit. How could I resist.

All of Vien’s vintage is in excellent condition without eye-popping price tags – easily less than half the price of similar vintage clothes you would see in boutiques around Portobello Road and Cheshire Street. Vien also holds a small range made from surplus and vintage fabrics under it’s eponymous label. I thought the vintage range was much stronger. This is where Vivienne’s eye for detail, love of fabrics and passion shines through.

Crystal Palace may not have the style of Notting Hill or the cool factor of the East End but it’s definitely worth taking a detour for. You never know what vintage treasures you might come home with.

Mid Century Design in the Village

Yesterday I headed off to the Mid Century Modern show being held in one of those London enclaves oddly known as a village. However, this part of London justifies the title. Dulwich Village has all the hallmarks of an English village despite being part of South East London's borough of Southwark. We drove alongside it's white picket fences, quaint shops and cafes, grand Georgian mansions and the Dulwich Picture Gallery before arriving at our destination. The magnificent Dulwich College. An impressive red brick building with large arched windows and statues carved into the stonework. Certainly a far cry from any college or school I have ever studied at. Not a pre-fab in sight!

Once inside, the design style changed to mid 20th Century as three large halls and a mezzanine level were stylishly filled for the day with Scandinavian, American and English retro furniture, 1950's textiles, huge modernist ceiling lights, glassware and glazed pottery signed by well known 20th Century designers with prices to occasionally raise an eyebrow. This was certainly a show for those people not psychologically equipped for flea markets, car-boot sales and junk shops.

Having said that there were many things that caught my eye and tugged at my purse strings:

Retro cushions and furniture at Emma Loves Retro

Emma Glibbery has a passion for retro textiles - she loves the large scale prints and bold colours. Emma re-designs discarded curtains and clothes into bright and beautiful cushions for her label Emma Loves Retro. Mid century furniture is also available, which Emma will source to customers' requests. It was the dining chairs shown in the corner of this photo that I considered buying - very reasonably priced at just over £200 for four.

Retro inspired hand-crafted products were also on show. I particular liked the whimsical designs traditionally screen-printed onto wallpaper by Lizzie Allen. All designs are hand-printed to order by Lizzie at her London studio. The paper is sourced from managed forests and any wastage is recycled at the local mill.

I'm torn between (no pun intended) the London City Gents design and the Jazz in Cental Park design. Two of my favourite cities. It's a difficult choice.

Retropolitan have a wonderful collection of gorgeous glassware, post war kitsch and mid 20th Century style objects. The glassware on display was truely gorgeous: solid jewel colours as well as swirling ombre effects. My only concern was that I might drop something only to be surrounded by shards of beautifully coloured glass.

I gingerly moved on to admire a 1960's suitcase on the same stand. Perfect for filling with retro bits and pieces that I've accumulated. It would have been a great statement bag for my college books too.

As we approach the end of what has been a difficult and uncertain financial year, retailers are launching their Christmas marketing campaigns to boost sales figures by enticing customers to purchase new outfits for the festive season.

I have to praise the innovative marketing team at Top Shop for launching a dress hire service as one of their Christmas marketing initiatives. Celebrities including Kate Moss and Dita Von Teese have agreed to donate dresses, which will be available for shoppers to hire for up to four days from December 7-23. In January, once the party season is over, the dresses will be auctioned off with all profits being donated to Age UK, a charity for the elderly.

Once again, it's a savvy marketing venture from Top Shop. One that I can't knock. The campaign high-lights sustainable fashion by encouraging shoppers to hire an 'one-off' dress rather than purchase a new mass-produced dress. A new dress that may never be worn again once the party season is over.

Never too cold for sandals

I have never liked my toes! I don’t want to go into detail. All I’m saying is they appear longer than average. There. I’ve said it. My secret is out. But my toes are staying in.

In summer, I try to wear shoes as often as possible. Or I wear sandals with enough coverage to hide the offending toes. Ah! But when Winter arrives, I rejoice the open toed sandal. Worn with socks, of course.

You see, I enjoy the unexpected mix of socks, opaques and woolly tights worn with strappy sandals. There's something interesting about a contrasting print and texture peeking through or even bunching up between the straps. I like to subvert that old style rule that socks with sandals is a major faux pas.

Imagine my delight when I came across Mohops. These innovative, environmentally friendly sandals are hand-crafted by Annie Mohaupt in her Chicago studio. The ergonomically designed soles are made from solid walnut, maple or cherry from sustainably managed forests. Ribbons of different lengths, colour and fabric can be threaded through the elastic loops to create an infinite number of looks with just one pair of sandals.

Fantastic for your individuality, your budget, your storage space and for sustainable fashion. What's more, they look fabulous with socks and woolly tights.

The time has come for a ruthless clear-out. It appears that I have applied the same logic to my computer's hard-drive as I have to my loft: cram in as much inspirational material as possible, never throw away / delete anything.

You see, clicking and dragging file after file into the trash icon seems an incredibly dull task to me. I'd much rather be in my loft dodging spiders and wooden beams in the search for forgotten pieces of fabric. Or so I thought until - mid click and drag - I came across these long-ago saved images.

Creative consultant Gary Harvey re-designed these outfits by reconstructing discarded garments. Why I haven't shared these images earlier I have no idea.

Seeing these outfits again has inspired me to make better use of the clothes and fabrics that I am hoarding in my loft. So while you take a look at Gary's creativity I'm off to join the spiders in my loft.

The fashion date of 2010 is July 14th when two iconic style capitals - London and Paris - are involved in an exciting, not-to-missed fashion experience. Don't worry! There is no VIP guest list for this event ... the invitation is open to everyone.

The event is being organised by EJF - the Environmental Justice Foundation - who are calling all adventure seeking style-savvy volunteers to embark on "The Great Fashion Cycle" from London to Paris in aid of their work addressing human rights and environmental abuses in the fashion industry.

You don't need to be a "pro cyclist" or a trend driven fashionista to take part. All you need is passion and pedal power to help change the face of fashion for the better.

Diesel Store Filled With Junk

I am a self confessed junky. I'm not ashamed to admit my obsession for junk and all things worn and torn. I can't pass by a junk shop without having a peak inside. A good old rummage.

This morning, I was stopped in my tracks as I rushed along Carnaby Street. It seems that someone at Diesel has my obsession for junk. The store has been transformed to create the appearance of a derelict building. It's all peeling layers of paint and rusting metal. Diesel's signature window display of edgy street fashion has been replaced by what can only be described as junk. Abandoned picture frames, neglected lamp-shades, random cups and saucers, scratched and scuffed suitcases now clutter the windows. Of course, it's not just any old junk. It's carefully selected junk. Styled junk. There, placed in amongst the junk, are Diesel's new season 'aged' jeans.

Diesel - as you would expect - are spot-on here with the trend for 'Rough Lux'. The trend for the not so perfect and slick*. The trend for surfaces aged by time*. I don't particularly like the concept of trends. Trends are a passing phase. Something soon to be replace. I would like to think that Diesel's display will inspire customers and passers-by to appreciate and embrace the beauty in cast-away objects. To recycle, re-use and re-design them. And, that includes last season's jeans.

Waiting For Warmth

After a few days away visiting my family, I was looking forward to getting back home. Don't get me wrong, I had a wonderful time. But no matter where I've been, there's nothing like returning to the familiar comfort of my own place. So my plan was to get through the door, throw my bags in one direction, my coat in the other, kick off my shoes, put the kettle on and collapse onto the sofa.

It was a bit on the chilly side when I entered my flat. I suppose it is October. So the first thing I did was to switch on the heating. I threw my bags into a corner. My coat remained on my back and my scarf didn't leave my neck. I checked the radiators. No heat. I put the kettle on. I made coffee. I checked the radiators. No heat. I collapsed onto the sofa still wearing my coat. I checked the radiators. No heat. I checked the boiler. I checked the thermostat. I checked the radiators. Still no heat. I phoned British Gas. Yes, an Engineer will be sent. He will be there between midday and 6pm tomorrow, which is today.

I am waiting for the Engineer to arrive. I am freezing! All I can think about is being wrapped and layered from head to toe in cozy warm clothes. Look at these gorgeous outfits from Bodkin. They would be just perfect for my current situation. Once my flat warms up, they'd be perfect for outdoors too.

Miksani - One to Watch.

I've mentioned Miksani before. I'm very excited about this label, which was launched at Pure back in August. So why the excitement? Miksani is everything that ethical fashion should be. Firstly, it's well designed: modern with an edgy sophistication. It's the clothes that grab your attention before the ethics behind the label. Then you realise that the collection is produced to fair trade standards using organic fabrics

Katie Weightman, the designer and founder of Miksani has a real talent. Her SS2010 collection is beautifully designed, ethical and commercial. That's quite an accomplishment.

Keep an eye out for Miksani's SS2010 collection. I have a feeling it's going to be a label to watch.

A Feast of Colour

Autumn. I love this time of year. Those amazing colours. Of course, if you'd asked me yesterday I would have hated this time of year: grey skies and wet, wet, wet. But, today it's glorious! In fact, today, Autumn could be my favourite season. You know when the leaves are gradually changing from green to glorious shades of rich red, burnished copper and glowing yellow. When shrubs are bursting with a feast of vibrant coloured berries. Who can't be inspired by a colour palette like this?

The LBD Lives On For Another Day

The "Little Black Dress". Stylish. Versatile. Timeless. Coco Chanel said that every woman should have one in her wardrobe. It can be dressed up for evening. Dressed down for day. Dressed to minimal perfection. Dressed to maximum dramatic effect. Sustainable, stylish dressing.

Sheena Matheiken and Eliza Starbuck designed their own LBD to begin the Uniform Project earlier this year. Inspired by her school days in India, where kids would personalise their uniforms with individual flair, Sheena decided to use the LBD as her uniform for a year. Each day, Sheena reinvents the dress by layering and accessorizing with vintage finds, hand-me-downs and hand-made items.

As well as being an amazing exercise in sustainable fashion and creativity, the Uniform Project also raises funds for the Akanksha Foundation. Akanksha is a non-profit organisation founded in Mumbai in 1990 to bring education to children living in slums.

The Uniform Project is perfect proof that fashion can be stylish, sustainable and socially conscious.

It's Brolly Time

There are two things that we Brits are associated with: Pubs and complaining about the weather. Yesterday it rained continuously all over the country. Yes, Autumn is finally here.
